To me, what AHM lacks is a general vision, a direction for the album as a whole. I think it's good, it's just that the band themselves get a lot better at things over the next few albums, the inevitable part of their success here being that they are playing more, practicing more, and able to focus their energy better. And I can't stand those late '60's early 70's "baaaaaah-ba-baaaaaaaah etc." Cringe. Rick clearly didn't care for his lyrics so he buried his vocals behind the music. That said, I like all of the songs, well, I like all of the songs apart from Summer of '68. It's kind of like a one sided Ummagumma except they told Nick, "you don't get a song". The songs don't feel like they belong together. It's like they had been forced to do homework.Įdit: I like side 2 although there's a weird incongruity. They get swept away with every step of the process from discovering it in their jam sessions to the recording and editing. On Echoes there is a communal love for the music. The only similarity is in the length of the song. It's cold and for me it it just doesn't have that Floyd soul coursing through its veins. Apart from David's solo in the middle of the song, you can tell they didn't put their heart into it. You know why it has faded over the years for me? (I don't dislike it mind you, it's mostly just an interesting point in their history for me). Listen to this if you want to know what I meant about them live at this time. Great album, definitely under heard but still not one of the best. I love all the live versions much better than the studio versions so when I listen to the album I want Fat Old Sun to go for 16 minutes. The problem I have with this album is that I have heard these songs played live, through bootlegs, and they rock so much more than the album versions. ![]() I don't look at this as experimental but more of a transition from the experimental time period to what they would become with DSOTM. I was surprised by the OP stating it was the best of the experimental years and I always had this closer to Meddle than Suacerful or Ummagumma. It is a different type of listening that most people don't enjoy. You aren't going to be going back to experimental Floyd to rock to. If you are a pretty straight forward rock and roller and think Floyd you go put on Money or Another Brick in the Wall. This record is best appreciated with the context of what comes after frankly. its easy to see how this informed something like the famous DSOTM cue cards, and even similar sections of the wall like the TVs the "are all these your guitars. it is one of the early examples of the band really playing with the interplay between found sound/samples/sound effects and music. you can hear lots of other songs in there "Brain Damage" most obviously.Īlan's psychedelic breakfast. I think "If" is really the beginning of the style Roger would hone in on for the rest of his career. its not a bad one, the soloing and the guitar tone aren't quite as developed as the later stuff but you can hear some growth from previous records. the cut and paste style and incorporating the brass section really works out for him.įat old sun is one of the few things from before DSOTM that David still plays in concert I believe (I think its just that and astronomy. ![]() I believe "breast milky" "mother fore" "funky dung" the stuff that's jammy on the "breathe" and "any colour." changes. the quiet middle sections of the suite which are a little more jammy are the best. since then I've given it much more of a chance and its grown on me. I used to hate it, but back when we had the album showdown a few months ago some of you guys really sold me on it. Please Share your opinions!ĪHM is difficult to approach. Overall I think Atom Heart Mother Is an underrated classic! This entire album makes me feel like i'm laying on a endless grass field in a country setting. Although probably ranked last on the album by most people, I still think it's a great song. And the transition from Acoustic to electric in this song was an awesome surprise.Īnd finally "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" was a very interesting Instrumental on the album. ![]() "Fat Old Sun" Is my favorite song off this album, it proves David Gilmour can be a great songwriter. "Summer 68'" Is a song that really captures the brilliance of Rick Wright. "If" is quite an interesting Roger Waters song, it's unlike other songs that feature his vocals and it's wonderful. "Atom Heart Mother" is long, but a unique and great instrumental song. I think it's by far the best album of the experimental years. I gave the the album my first real listen through today.
